DCCC Member Learns to Drive a Sleigh

It’s really fun cruising around town in that Classic Chevy, but can you imagine flying around the sky in a vintage sleigh ? Well, one of our members has been getting lessons in how to do just that and is planning on putting that skill to use on Christmas Eve. Lamar needed a retirement gig and having been told he would make a good Santa he set out to find a Santa School. There aren’t many of those around this side of the North Pole, but he lucked out and found the Charles W. Howard Santa School in Midland, Michigan. The school was founded in 1937 in New York by Mr Howard (who was a Macy’s Santa).

So, on Oct 16, 2002 the North West Reindeer picked Lamar up in Atlanta and flew him to Michigan where he attended the school for three days. The school was a blast with more than 50 people attending . There were 19 other new students there to learn the ways of Santa and Mrs Claus and 30 or more of the jolly ole folk who had attended before…..back to have a good time and help train the new people! This year Tom Valent, who is the Dean of the school, had decided to allow a crew from CBS to film the happenings. Watch for a segment on CBS Sunday Morning sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas to see what a great time was had by all who attended!

Well, the three days were a whirlwind…..getting fitted for Santa Suits, getting trained in Santa ways, visiting the toy elves at Toys ‘R Us, the Christmas shop in Frankenmuth, MI, the local TV station and most importantly a trip to visit Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet , Cupid, Donder, Blitzen AND Rudolph to get a flying lesson ! What a thrill that must have been to be whisked away into the night sky in a mid 50’s classic sleigh !!

Having been trained, Lamar was chosen to work with one of the local school groups who attended the Santa House during the school and he had a great time. On Saturday night he received a diploma from the school during a graduation banquet.

He had a great time meeting the other Santas and Mrs Claus folk from all around the country, Canada and Russia. He plans to return for more fun in 2003 and Judy will go to be trained as Mrs Claus !! Here’s his picture after graduation……watch for him on Christmas Eve !!

CALVARY CHILDREN'S HOME ANNUAL DCCC PICNIC

Once again the annual fall picnic for the Calvary Children's Home was a BIG success thanks to the 30 DCCC family members and friends. As always a big highlight of the day was the arrival of the Gray hounds. De and Jon have faithful brought the pups for several years for the children to enjoy (and for the pups to enjoy the children!). Our Chefs, Bob and Mac, had expert supervision this year from Jim Bolt, Wally and Bob Forth...no undercooked burgers in sight! Thanks to all of the DCCC ladies there were plenty of side dishes to go with the burgers. We are happy to say that Glenda's wonderful apple pies got to attend the picnic even though she was unable to be with us. Our In-House Artist Extrodinare, Judy May, wasn't quite as busy as usual this year, but I think the kids just couldn't wait in line as long when they were outside with all of the activity around them. Nicole Caruso and her friend (Kaley) did an outstanding job calling Bingo for the children. We had around 45 prizes available and she was able to give most of them away. That's a LOT of Bingo games!! The Crenshaws 3 little boys and the Pineyro's little Mike, blended right in with all of the Calvary children and obviously had a great time too. Our newest members Mac and June MacGregor along with their daughter Nikki arrived bearing a hugh bouquet of bright balloons which were a big hit with all of us! Our ever-hard-working-substitute Club President took the opportunity to practice a little politics and hopefully got Amy Higgins to agree to be on our proposed slate of officers for 2003 as our Secretary...way to go Bob!! We had three club classics driven to the picnic along with Bob and Barbara Forth's fabulous newly acquired, all original '39 Ford. Last, but by no means least, we were treated to a musical session of Bump, Jump and Jive with Mama Bell. Great fun, Alice!! Next year we will get all of the club members and more kids to join you.

Again, a big THANK YOU to all who attended and made the picnic a fun event.

MINUTES of the November 7 - DCCC regular meeting

Meeting was called to order by our "Substitute" President Bob Bryant at 7:35PM.

First up was the Treasurer's report - Therese reported there was $ 1,225.00 in the bank after deducting the $110.04 to Sandy Bryant for the Calvary picnic and $92.00 to Ed Brown for the last three newsletters. The Christmas party still has to be paid for and the insurance for the club is also due - Bob Bryant will call the Chevy club for the bill.

Calvary Picnic - It was a great turnout from the club - approximately 22 adult club members and 5/6 kids from the club and 29 kids and staff members from Calvary. We grilled burgers, played games, Alice Bell brought music to do the Chicken dance, macarana and more, Judy May was kept busy face painting and of course the Hansen's brought the dogs which are always a big hit! Thank you to Sandy Bryant for putting it all together!! June MacGregor has a wish list for the Calvary kids for anyone interested.

Moultrie - Bill Brown still has one room available for November 22nd, this room will be cancelled by the Tuesday of that week.

Newsletter - The newsletter is getting very expensive to print, collate, and postage so internet access was discussed. Those that do not have internet access will continue to get the newsletter, more information will be forthcoming.

Corvette Story - this story was enjoyed so much it was asked if Bill Brown can get another story about Chevy's - he will try.

Christmas Party - If you will be going to our party on December 7th at Cheatham Hall, (and we hope to see all our club members there)-, please contact Therese Caruso at 770-423-7491 for a count and to bring a dish to share. Lamar May will be in charge of getting the key and opening the door at 5:30PM for us to set up everyone should be there around 6:PM and dinner will be at about 6:30PM. All adults should bring a gift for a man if you are a man and a gift for a woman if you are a woman for about $10.00 for the white elephant gift exchange. We are also asking for everyone to bring a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly for Sandy Bryant to bring to M.U.S.T. ministries.

We will be electing new officers at the Christmas party, please let Bob Bryant know which office you would like to sign up for!

There will be a list passed around for members to take turns at cruise nights and providing a raffle gift at our monthly meetings to support our Christmas party - no one will be allowed to leave until we get this list filled!

Unfortunately the Barnett's and the Bell's will not be attending - both couples are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversaries on a cruise (not a Chevy cruise either) - they will be missed!
This is the last year that the Caruso family will be handling the Christmas party - it would be appreciated if someone will come prepared to take over!!!!!

Raffle - The raffle gift was donated by the Caruso's and was won by Glen Barnett (man gift) and Dee Hansen (woman gift). $22.00 was collected

Meeting was adjourned at 7:45PM, next meeting will be held at the Christmas party!
