During the Apple Festival Car Show this past weekend, Glen Barnett's 1956 took top 25 in modified class, 1949 and up.
Mid-Tennessee Classic Chevy Car Show
September 26-28, 2003
’56 ’56 ‘56
It was an all 1956 weekend representing the Dixie Classic Chevy Club at the 24th annual Music City Convention sponsored by the Mid-TN Classic Chevy Club. The car show, held in Hendersonville, TN, was attended by Wally and Alice Bell in their 1956 BelAir Custom, Glen and Kathy Barnett in their 1956 BelAir Custom and Jon and Dee Hanson in their 1956 BelAir Original.
Jon and Dee traveled up a day earlier to visit their really rich friends who live up there. The Barnetts and us left on Friday. The weather was perfect, and the company was entertaining as usual. The day started at the typical breakfast stop at the Cracker Barrel in Cartersville.
This club puts on a really nice show. They provided a BBQ supper on Friday night, and then a private showing of the Yanko Camaro Collection. This guy has about 50-60 classic cars including a rare one of a kind Packard. This car collection is a sight to see, and it is not opened to the public. We are one of the privileged to see it.
On Saturday, the nice men from the club who drive the bus will take us anywhere we want to go, and of course, the girls headed out for the flea market and spent several hours, not to mention several dollars. For some reason, we just could not get the guys to tag along. Imagine that, they had rather hang around the cars than go shopping for fleas!!!
Saturday night, there was a cruise night on the hotel lawn, with live music provided by the Chessmen (as opposed to dead music???). We got to see different cars than what we normally see at our local cruise nights – including a ’57 Chevy that was plastic bag painted (where you put one color on and then take a plastic bag and lie over the paint to make it look textured), or something like that. There were over 100 cars at the cruise night and plaques were awarded to the top 10 cruisers. I am please to announce that Wally’s 1956 received a plaque.
Sunday’s awards ceremony was profitable for the three 1956’s as they all won plaques. Jon’s 1956 Original took 2nd place in his class. Glen’s 1956 Custom took 1st place in his class. And of course, I save the best for last…..Wally’s 1956 Custom took Best of Class, Best Interior and…and…..and…drum roll……People’s Choice. We were really surprised by that one, but quite honored. The Best of Class plaque was given in memory of a club member’s son that had passed away. That was a touching moment when this award was given and the significance of it was described. We were honored to have received it also.
All in all, it was a great weekend, good food, good weather and good company. OH WAIT!!! I almost forgot to tell you about the highlight of the trip. One of the wives from the car club took Kathy and me to the grave site of Johnny Cash, which was about 1 mile down the road from the hotel. Then she took us over by his house, which was about 1 mile the other direction from the hotel. The Baptist church where they had his service was across the parking lot from the hotel. We also went by a home owned by one of the …dang it, was it the Statler Brothers, or Oak Ridge Boys….he has the long white beard. Anyway……that memory thing again!
I do encourage everyone to take this trip with us next year. It will be the 25th anniversary of this show and they are planning on doing it up big. We always have a good time regardless, but I imagine next year with be every better. It is such a pretty ride through the mountains. The people up there are extremely nice and would love to see a big showing from the Dixie Classic Chevy Club. Mark your calendars now for the last weekend in September 2004. Anyone whose car is not running now, you have a whole year to get it put back together again. Let’s take that club participation award next year, like we used to in years past.
