Barnsley Gardens Trip July 17, 2004 by Alice Bell
It started out as an iffy day – was it going to rain, or not? By all forecasters account, it was definitely going to be a rainy day. So, only three classic cars showed up at the Fowl Play Café, in addition to three regular cars. The brave souls that brought their classic cars were Lamar May in his 1957, Wally and Alice Bell in their 1956 and Wayne Foshee in his 1955. The naysayers were Bill and Becky Brown in their Chevy Tahoe, Jim Brown and his friend Heidi in his Jeep Cherokee, and last but certainly not least….Bob and Sandy Bryant in their Ford SUV (you see a pattern here??). We were so thrilled to have Bob and Sandy go, and Sandy, you looked MARVELOUS!!!! It was so good seeing you back to your old self again. Oops, I forgot another important person, and such a welcomed addition to our group – Becky’s mother, who herself is an avid gardener. She was able to name plants we could not figure out. She was such a joy to have around.
After meeting at Fowl Play Café, we continued to Doug’s Place in Emerson for a good old country breakfast, complete with the authentic décor. Doug’s is a treat in itself, and big thumbs up to the grits according to Jim. Unfortunately, Bob and Sandy could not continue on to Barnsley Gardens because of the sun. But that was OK, since we were able to enjoy them at breakfast. Wait - did that say sun!? So much for that 99.9% chance of rain! Lamar took us on a back roads trip to the gardens, which sure beats the expressway.
We met up with the best historian, Clint. He was so knowledgeable about the grounds, the ruins (Barnsley’s old home place), the people that lived there and all the history surrounding Barnsley Gardens. He could have talked to us for hours. Without his input, the gardens and house would have no meaning. Just a pretty garden and an old run down shell of a house. He made the grounds come to life. You could envision children running around playing, women strolling through the gardens in their long dresses, and men smoking cigars in the back room.
The tour did last about one hour, and then we strolled through the gardens admiring all the many different flowers and wishing our yards looked like that. We all wandered back to the welcome cabin and sat on the back porch for a spell sipping peach tea, lemonade and water, watching the hummingbirds and other variety of birds fluttering around. The swing and rocking chairs in the cool summer breeze was comforting and relaxing.
It had only been a few hours since we ate breakfast, so we decided to head back to Cartersville for lunch at the Cracker Barrel. It just ain’t a field trip without at least one meal at the Cracker Barrel. Whoops sorry for the English, but the breakfast at Doug’s and the peach tea in the swing on the back porch really brought out the southern heritage. Again, Lamar took us on the scenic route through Kingston. If you blinked you missed downtown. But it was a good change from the interstate. Back roads are always the best.
It was a fun, relaxing and enjoyable day. The rain did come about the time we got home, but by then we were ready for a nap on the couch. If you did not make it because of good reasons like poison ivy (Don Naugle), or broken ribs (Gary Caruso), or even for bad reasons like a threat of rain (you know who you are) you missed a good time.
