Treasurer's Report:
Old Business:
Cruise Night: location is center of the parking lot near the Outback Steakhouse.
Bill Brown requested help in unloading and returning the generator.
There was a lot of discussion on disbanding music altogether and it was decided that it would take place for the rest of this
cruise night season but would voted on for next season.
A great time was had by all the participants in the Club cruise & picnic, which was held on 6/21/03.
Look for an article soon on all the details and the lovely Mayfield ice cream :).
**7/12/03** Don't forget about the dinner at Fireside Restaurant at 6pm for fellowship and potential new cruise night
location! The restaurant is located at Hwy 92 & I-575.
New Business:
There was some discussion on how the club could generate funds if the music was disbanded at the Cruise Night. One
suggestion was selling ad space for the newsletter.
Another suggestion was to hand out the club history with the website address at the Cruise Night - possibly to generate new
members. We also discussed creating a flyer with the sold advertisements on one side and the history on the other to hand
out at various functions & other cruise nights (if someone
is going).
There was no raffle prize, so Jim Bolt didn't get to win this month :).
Our turnout was small but we had a great time. Jim Bolt was entertaining us with various jokes and showed off his FORD
truck with the Chevy engine after the meeting was over.
Adjourn business meeting at 8:17pm.
Mountain Cruise (June 21, 2003) by James Brown
People attending: Bill & Becky Brown, Jim Brown, Heidi Wilson, Lamar & Judy May, Charles & Charlene Ross and Bob & Sandy Bryant
Classics: Bob AND Lamar’s 57s
We left the Cracker Barrel on Chastain at 8:15am. With 4 vehicles (Charles, Bill and I could not drive our classics because of mechanical problems). Little did we know how interesting the trip would be, including great weather, gold, antiques, and exercise.
The first stop up I-575 was for a big breakfast at the Citgo (formerly Fina) gas station. We soon discovered that although the oil company changed their name, the grease is the same. Bill is trying to gain some weight and after his breakfast, finished off leftover helpings of eggs, bacon, country ham and biscuits. I’m not sure who took Bob’s fatback out in a doggie bag!
Next, we stopped to hunt antiques at Falling Rock where Becky bought a short decorated can to store food for the birds. I almost bought a vegetable tureen until Sandy warned me it was once a “thunder mug”. Outside the shop, the boys fascinated themselves watching vines grow through a sidewalk building. Across the street sat an abandoned train caboose that the boys inspected and imagined they were climbing cowboys shooting at maurading indians.
Finally, we began cruising down georgous winding roads toward Amicolola Falls. I was leading when Heidi noticed Bob lagging behind. I later discovered his brakes were smoking down the inclines. Also, later I discovered that Lamar noticed his ‘57 was skipping and he was taking it easy. I remembered the last cruise up here when we lost 2 cars. I still have the photo of the car club beneath the hood of my car after it vapor locked on the falls.
When we arrived at Amicolola, Lamar quickly gave everyone fragrant dryer softener sheets to discourage biting insects and to aromatize everything. I believe they also kept my armpits dry until falling out.
Our reserved covered picnic site was found occupied by a religious sect and soon overrun by a group of seniors taking a shortcut, possibly looking for their bus. I conversed with the sect leader and we agreed to let him continue smoking burgers. Unfortunately, the wind shifted and it was awhile before we could see, but the smoke did keep the bugs away.
After eating we wanted exercise and partially climbed the falls thereby discovering what was believed to be the carcass of a 50's era car halfway up the climb. We couldn’t tell if the car was coming up or going down the falls. (I took pictures for the disbelievers) If it was going up it was in reverse because the trunk area was uphill and was filled with broken gallon jugs.
When our legs quit twitching, Sandy suggested we pan for gold to help offset expenses. Soon nuggets began to appear as we screened out the silt. Since no one was wearing pantyhose, we were forced to use our clothes dryer softening sheets for screening. They worked just as well. Pantyhose should always be worn or carried on a trip in case the fan belt breaks.
Lamar and Judy decided it was best to forego the remainder of the trip due to intermitten skipping. After quickly loading and consealing the gold, Bob and Sandy followed them in case of trouble.
Everyone else trekked on to Dahlonega for some ice cream. They have my favorite, “moose tracks”! We all enjoyed ourselves in the soda shop on the square. We helped Charles unload some of his old textbooks that he donated to the antique book store on the square.
Soon it was time to depart this wonderful experience. We had great weather, found gold, exercised, ate 3 times, antique shopped, was kind to others and enjoyed conversation. Ready for another this fall?
