MINUTES of the June 5th DCCC meeting

Call to Order @ 7.47pm

Bill welcomed members and there were no guests.

Reading of minutes was waived.

Becky Brown gave treasurer's report as David was out of town: $1,437.84

Old Business:

There was more discussion about the location of the Cruise Night. It has been moved to the center of the parking lot near the Outback Restaurant for the time being. Jon Hansen had identified several good alternative locations that could be used if we need to move. The current location on Barrett Parkway is working fine for now, in spite of the construction in the area.

The Deejay has the club's table for the Cruise Night season to help out with storage and setup. He will return it in October.

Jon Hansen will continue to supply his generator for the Cruise night.

There was more discussion on various possible new locations for the Cruise Night. Several people/groups have requested the monthly event be moved to their location.

Club Cruise & Picnic: Members will leave the Cracker Barrel on Chastain Road at 8am sharp for the trip to Amicolola Falls and Dahlonega on June 21st .

New Business:

Bob Bryant reported that the manager of Hooters on Holcomb Bridge Rd. has offered to host a Cruise Night on July 12th, but it was decided that the club would decline in light of our other commitments.

***There will be an outing to scout places on 7/12/03 - at the Fireside Restaurant @6pm. The restaurant is located at Hwy 92 & I 575. All members are more than welcome to check out the restaurant and site as a group.***

Bill Brown read a letter from Phil Wotring, a founding member of our club, who now lives in Kentucky. A copy of the letter can be found on the website.

Bill Brown announced that he has a copy of the Academy Award winning video "The Accountant" that Walt Goggins directed and starred in. Walt's father, club-member Sandy Goggins, presented the video to the club at a Cruise Night earlier this season. It’s available to club-members. Anyone who wants to watch the video should let him know.

Bill Brown told of several up and coming car shows, including:

1) Cruz-N-Monticello on the Square (Monticello, GA) - 6/14/03 @noon *with judging beginning at 6pm*. There will be a street dance beginning at 8pm. Registration before 6/12/03, is $15 and on the day of the show is $20. Please call 706-468-8834 for more details.

Jon Hansen reminded everyone that there will be a Cruise Night, Block Party & Dance on 6/14/03 in Rockmart.

Dee Hansen asked how many cars typically show up on a given Cruise Night and it was discussed and a round figure of 100-125 was decided on average.

Winner's Circle:

Jon Hansen gave a quick report on Pigeon Forge. He stated that all had a great time, despite the weather. It rained and hailed on them, but no cars were damaged thankfully. He said that both he and Glenn received 2nd place - way to go guys.

Speaking of winners in our group, Jim Stacy won with his "new" 1968 Camaro, the People's Choice in Cumming. Congratulations to Jim also.

The raffle prize was provided by John & C.J. Crenshaw. Jim Bolt won the rechargeable flashlight and a chamois.

Meeting was adjourned @ 8:45pm

Pigeon Forge - 2003 By: Alice Bell

Another year has come and another trip to Pigeon Forge has come and gone. These trips seem to come so quickly, but that is fine with the ones that make the journey. As usual, we started out on Thursday morning with the breakfast stop at the Cracker Barrel. You would think those folks would start giving us discounts for the business we give them - not the mention the publicity.

The early birds were Tommy and Pam Bell and their two kids - Leslie and Jake, Glen and Kathy (remember them?) and Wally and I. After a hearty breakfast, the wagon train headed up through the small towns of Georgia and then Tennessee. We elect to take the back roads instead of the trip on I-75. Jon and Dee did take the I-75 route since he trailers his car in that neat trailer of his. Trailers and winding mountain roads do not make a compatible couple.

After arriving and checking in, it is off to get lunch (you will see a theme going here - food!). We got back to the hotel in time to watch the tornado past through Tennessee, including Pigeon Forge. With small hail bouncing into the hotel room, Wally on the balcony watching for the tornado, the TV on monitoring the storm, and many nervous classic car owners, we did manage to survive the storm with no damage, even though there were tornados touching down around us. Jon and Dee drove down towards Gatlinburg and said the hail was so thick it looked like snow in May.

Since it was raining through-out the evening, Kathy drug out the Phase 10 cards and we sat down in the lobby playing cards. What better way to entertain ourselves than with good company. Finally about 8:30, after the rain had stopped, we decided to head up to the Cracker Barrel for more food - again.

Friday, the boys spent some of the morning cleaning off the cars and doing some shopping at the swap meet. Early in the afternoon, Jon took us in his truck down to what used to be the BelAir café, but the name has now been changed to ....... woops, can't remember, but it still has the classic car theme to it, and the burgers are still as good.

Later that afternoon more club members arrived including Jerry and Jan Keith, David, Chris, Jake and Rachael Homoki, and then that evening Dan and Sheila Pineyro with Michael in their '57 Chevy.

Most of the weekend was spent walking, eating, looking at cars, and answering the most frequently asked question of the weekend - "what color is that car" referring to Wally's newly restored '56 chevy. I am also sad to report that we only received $3.03 donations to install interior in the car. Kathy won a '57 bank as a door prize and we used it to put in the car to collect donations. Trust me folks, that method does not work. At that rate, we would have to go to 825 car shows. Forgitaboutit!!!

On Sunday, we had two big winners during the awards ceremony. Glen took 2nd place in the '56 custom class and Jon also took 2nd place for the '56 originals. Congratulations boys.

We did dodge rain drops the entire weekend, but most of the time it was no problem. Again, fun was had by all that attended. Rooms are already reserved for next year, and hopefully Glen will have a new '57 convertible ready for the trip (if Glen and Wally will get on the ball). So make your calendars for May 14-16, 2004 and join us for the annual Pigeon Forge, Tennessee Smokey Mountain Classic Car Show. You'll be glad you did!

LETTER from Phil and Mary Wotring

I am enclosing the Newsletter of which I am the editor here in Kentucky, “The Car Cover”. I really enjoy your Newsletter and keeping up with what members are doing. When I was reading your Newsletter the other day, it brought back memories of the great times we had when we were just a fledgling organization.

As many of you know, the DCCC almost didn’t happen. In 1981 someone had placed an ad in the paper wanting to start a new chapter of Classic Chevy (before it became a corporation) on the West side of Atlanta. The arguments against forming another club in town were strong since there already was a chapter on the East side of the perimeter. The meeting was to be held at the Chevy dealer in Sandy Springs, the name of which escapes me.

Anyway, about a dozen of us showed up in the conference room and this guy named Johnson, who had placed the ad, was a no-show. Someone was there from The Vintage Chevrolet Club of America and they kind of tried to take over and suggested we (those of us with 5-6-7s) join their club. Several spoke up and the consensus seemed to be that tri-fives were as much about the era of the 50s as it was about the cars. Those of us that thought like that met in the parking lot after the meeting and agreed to meet for the first organizational meeting at our house, in a few weeks. At that meeting were the Gribbles, the Cranstons, and Wayne Foshee as I recall. It was either at that meeting or the next we elected officers and the rest, as they say, is history.

By the way, that guy Johnson who had placed the ad forming the club, had been killed in a car wreck between the time he placed the ad and the meeting. We all felt bad about what we’d said about him after we found out.

I think the success and longevity of DCCC has to do with sticking to the principles of the founding fathers (and mothers) to make it a family club. From what I can see, it still is. We’ve seen kids grow up and get married and have kids of their own during the lifespan of the club. My son Bruce is 39 and living in New Jersey and working in NYC as a copy writer for an ad firm. Daphne is 33, married to a drag racer (engineer) and living in Illinois, near St. Louis.

I still have my two-door hardtop although it’s apart again (rear brake rebuild, power front dixc brakes and engine dress-up). Mary has a 1965 Ford Mustang GT (apologies) Convertible. I work for Rotary Lift which is the world’s largest manufacturer of automotive lifts (I have two in my garage). We have a line of lifts for the home market. They are marketed under the name of “Revolution”. Visit our Website at www.revolutionlifts.com or www.rotarylift.com. That’s all for the commercial portion of this letter.

That’s all for now, you’re doing a good job of keeping the club going and helping the community. That club is really something special, believe me I know, I’ve been involved in the startup of two clubs in this area. There was always something special about the people who stuck with DCCC. Good luck!
