PICNIC--
by Lamar May (and Bill Brown)
The Semi-Annual DCCC picnic was held May 11 at the Corp of Engineer's park next to the
Etowah river just off Highway 41. Seven families attended...the Carusos, Bells, Barnetts,
Hansons, Bill Browns, Bryants and the Mays. We had a beautiful day, and the food was
great. Many thanks to Gary and Terese for organizing the event and bringing the meat,
grill, plates, etc.....it wouldn't have happened without them! Bob Bryant and Gary
handled the cooking. In addition to the hamburgers, Gary and Terese brought New York
style hot dogs, and they were very tasty!! Other folks brought salads, baked beans and
a variety of other side dishes. And of course, the desserts were scrumptious. Alice
educated Gary Caruso about Southern dishes. You know how far you can trust her,
right? Gary, that was not Peach Cobbler!
There were games for the young and young at heart, and some tried walking a log
across the stream nearby. Trapper Bob had a tough time keeping up with his hat
as it got a soft drink spilled on it and was run over by Gary's '57, but at the
end of the day it didn't look any worse than before!
The day was filled with lively and informative conversation. Several of the ladies
went on excursions to check out various plants and rocks along the stream and
path. They discussed landscaping and gardening ideas, water falls and pools, and
made plans to beautify their yards ... one of these days. The guys talked about
cars and food. You know ... the hamburgers had to be cooked just right, and we
had a debate about how many to cook. Then we started the discussion all over when
it was time to cook the hot dogs. And did you know that Gary Caruso's '57 is for
sale?
We were especially delighted to have Jon and Dee Hanson with us in light of Jon's
recent close call. A week or so before the picnic, Jon was traveling by
commercial air, and he began to experience serious discomfort in his chest. He
checked his heart rate and watched for other signs that might give a clue as to
what was wrong. He was feeling a great deal of pressure, like a very heavy weight
on his chest. His connecting flight was cancelled, and he decided to catch the
next plane home rather than take a chance on having heart problems away from home
and family. As soon as he got home, Dee took him to a medical facility. Soon, he
was in the hospital where he had angioplasty. Several shunts were installed at
that time to keep the arteries open. Jon is doing just great, now. He said the
experience was a very important "wake up call." He's committed to a more healthy
life style, now, ... one that includes regular exercise and a health-oriented
diet.
A good time was had by all! If you didn't make it, you missed a good outing.

PIGEON FORGE TRIP
We are now heading down I-75 north of Chattanooga coming back from the annual Pigeon
Forge trip. We had several "firsts" for this trip. The first "first" was that only four people
starting out as opposed to the usual eight to ten. The second "first" was that only one classic
car was driven and entered into the show. Glen and Kathy Barnett drove their 1956, but
Glenn entered his as a “not to be judged”. So, this report will be shorter since there won’t be
a report on winners which is the third "first". Of course Glen’s car is always a winner
regardless of receiving a trophy or not. (I have been mean to him, so I have to say something
nice to get back on his good side. On second thought, it was Glenn that was mean to me,
which is not a "first".)
As the weekend progressed, the number of club members swelled. In addition to Glen and
Kathy, and Wally and Alice Bell, we were joined by Jerry and Jan Keith, Mike and Martha
Cole, Charles and Charlene Ross, James and Martha Luallen, and Ed and Kathy Van. Also
included were Kathy’s brother and his family, Dennis and Janet Wells and their sons Nick
and Taylor. Actually we ran into Charles and Charlene at the Apple Barn on Saturday night,
but that counts cause they were in Pigeon Forge. Sorry we did not see more of them that
weekend.
The fourth "first" was that we did not attend a show on Saturday night. Not that we did not
have reservations for one, cause we did. The problem was the traffic. The show was in
Gatlinburg and we were eating supper in Pigeon Forge. Our waitress told us it would take
three hours to drive to Pigeon Forge because of the traffic. Since this was 6:00 and we had to
be at the theater at 7:30, and we had not been served yet, we called and cancelled our seats.
As it turned out, the traffic was not that bad because Jerry and Jan and Ed and Kathy made it
to the show. However, as luck would have it for us, but bad luck for them, they said the show
was terrible and left during intermission. We thank our waitress for saving each of us $20.00.
That is the fifth "first" because we have not seen a bad show in Pigeon Forge yet. All shows
we have attended in the past years were fantastic. Guess the lesson learned here is not to
schedule a show in Gatlinburg. (Make mental note of that for next year.)
The sixth "first" was that the weather turned really cold on Saturday and Sunday, which it also
did in the Atlanta area. We were bundled in jeans and jackets, as opposed to the usual shorts.
However, it only rained slightly Friday night, so that was a plus. It was a fairly uneventful
weekend, the usual shopping (the girls as well as the guys at the swap meet), go-cart riding
and eating, eating, eating. But we still had a great weekend, and looked at many awesome 55,
56 and 57’s. We also made our way down to the Ford show to check out the Ford trucks.
Hope the Chevy fairies won’t put a jinx on us for patronizing the Ford show. I must say
though, there are some really neat and unique trucks at that show, (say that five times fast).
Maybe next year Wally will have his '56 ready to go, Mike Cole will have his '55 built, Bill
Soyak will have a job, Dave and Chris will have their baby, and we will have a big
delegation of Dixie Classic Chevy’s to represent the club. Hopefully, one of these years we
can beat out the Ohio Chevy Club for best attendance. We missed all who did not attend and
hope to see you next year.
